MARCH 31 // DISCOVER YOUR IDENTITY

“Identity is cause; brand is effect, and the strength of the former influences the strength of the latter.” — Larry Ackerman

Your identity as a thought leader is the foundation upon which your brand is built. It shapes the perception others have of you and dictates the value you bring into the world. When your outward identity accurately reflects who you are and the values you uphold, your brand becomes not just recognizable but meaningful. However, your identity isn’t fixed—it evolves as you gain experience, face challenges, and continue learning. Embracing this evolution keeps your identity authentic and allows your brand to grow in its relevance and impact. Reflect on how your personal journey has shaped your current identity and what that means for your brand. What does your audience ‘see’ when they see you?

👀  Take a moment to assess whether your outward appearance truly reflects who you are today. What steps can you take to ensure your identity remains aligned with your evolving values and goals?

// YOUR IDENTITY IS YOUR SUPERPOWERUSE IT WISELY

Ask yourself:

◾  Is my brand a true reflection of who I am and the value I deliver?

◾  Do my visuals, messaging, and presence stand out—or blend in?

◾  What three words would my audience use to describe me?

👀 If you’re not sure, the world probably isn’t either.

“The way your outward appearance as a thought leader looks is often the first thing others notice, and that initial impression can stick with them. This is why your brand’s identity—the outward expression of who you are and the value you bring—is one of the most essential fundamentals to get right. A strong identity creates alignment between perception and reality, ensuring that what people see matches the value you deliver.”

// FIRST IMPRESSIONS STICK—ARE YOU MAKING THE RIGHT ONE?

Growing up as an identical twin, I became acutely aware of perception and reality. People would mistake my sister for me, and vice versa—without really knowing us.

The experience taught me a powerful lesson:

☑️  People judge quickly, based on what’s visible.

☑️  If your brand identity isn’t clear, others will define it for you.

☑️  You must be intentional in shaping the way you are perceived.

Your visual brand, from your website to your social media, needs to be instantly recognizable and memorable. According to research at Missouri University of Science and Technology, users form an opinion of your website within 0.2 seconds—and in the next 2.6 seconds, they decide whether to stay or leave.

💬 ASK YOURSELF: If someone looked at my website for three seconds, what impression would they get?

// THE IDENTITY REALITY CHECK

Use these exercises to evaluate where your brand stands:

🗨️  BRAND PERCEPTION TEST:

  • Ask three people (someone new, a peer, and a long-time follower) to describe you in three words.
  • Compare their answers. Do they match how you want to be seen?

🗨️  TRADE PLACES EXERCISE:

  • Pretend you’re an audience member discovering your brand for the first time.
  • Search your name online.
  • Look at your website, social media, and content. Would you follow yourself?

🗨️  COLOR AND SYMBOLS TEST:

  • What colors represent your brand? Studies show colors evoke strong emotions and influence perception.
  • What symbols define your leadership style? Iconography matters more than we realize.

P.S. I’d love to know—what’s one color that represents your personal brand? Hit reply and tell me. I just might feature it in the next issue.

💬  If your brand feels inconsistent or unclear, it’s time for an upgrade.

// WHAT MAKES MEL ROBBINS A STAND OUT THOUGHT LEADER

Before she became a global sensation, Mel Robbins was a criminal defense attorney facing burnout, debt, and self-doubt—until one morning, she launched herself out of bed with a simple “5-4-3-2-1” countdown that would go on to change millions of lives. That moment became the cornerstone of a brand built on action, authenticity, and massive reach.

Her unmistakable yellow color palette, signature glasses, and no-nonsense tone make her instantly recognizable—and instantly trusted. Mel’s brand is more than a look; it’s a promise of clarity, courage, and getting out of your own way.

  • Consistency is her superpower—from visuals to voice.
  • Her yellow brand identity radiates optimism and action.
  • Iconic glasses = instant recognition (and relatability).
  • The 5 Second Rule made self-help simple and science-backed.
  • She doesn’t preach; she connects through raw, real storytelling.
